"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
Introduction
Marriage is one of the oldest institutions established by God, yet it remains one of the most attacked. From the Garden of Eden to modern society, the enemy has consistently sought to destroy marriage because it represents God's design for humanity. Today, we will examine the attacks on marriage and how believers can stand strong to defend it.
1. The Origin of Marriage and Satan's Hatred for It
- Marriage is God's Idea: (Genesis 2:18) – God created marriage as a covenant between a man and a woman for companionship, love, and procreation.
- Satan Hates What God Loves: From the beginning, Satan sought to distort God's plan (Genesis 3:1-6). By deceiving Eve, he attacked the foundation of the first marriage, leading to pain and disorder.
- Marriage Reflects Christ and the Church: (Ephesians 5:31-32) – The devil attacks marriage because it mirrors the relationship between Christ and His bride, the Church.
2. The Weapons Used Against Marriage
a) The Weapon of Selfishness
- Philippians 2:3-4 – Selfishness leads to strife, lack of communication, and emotional distance.
- Couples must learn selflessness, humility, and sacrificial love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
b) The Weapon of Infidelity and Lust
- Hebrews 13:4 – God commands faithfulness in marriage, but the enemy promotes adultery through media, technology, and cultural trends.
- Solution: Guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23), set boundaries, and remain accountable to one another.
c) The Weapon of Divorce and Separation
- Malachi 2:16 – "For the LORD God of Israel says that He hates divorce..."
- The enemy promotes easy divorce and broken homes, knowing that families are the foundation of society.
- Solution: Seek godly counsel (Proverbs 11:14), practice forgiveness (Colossians 3:13), and allow God to heal broken relationships.
d) The Weapon of Redefining Marriage
- The world has redefined marriage to fit human desires rather than God's will (Romans 1:26-27).
- As believers, we must stand for biblical truth while showing love to those deceived by false ideologies.
e) The Weapon of Busyness and Neglect
- Many marriages suffer because couples are too busy for each other (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).
- Solution: Prioritize quality time, prayer, and communication.
3. How to Defend Your Marriage
- Make God the Center – Matthew 6:33
- Commit to Prayer and Fasting – Matthew 17:21
- Communicate with Love and Understanding – James 1:19
- Forgive Quickly and Often – Ephesians 4:32
- Surround Yourself with Godly Counsel – Proverbs 15:22
Conclusion: The Call to Fight for Marriage
God designed marriage for His glory, but the enemy seeks to destroy it. As believers, we must rise to defend our marriages through prayer, wisdom, and obedience to God's Word. Let us commit to being faithful stewards of this divine institution.
