Introduction
Goshen was not just a land in Egypt; it was a covenant place of divine provision, protection, and preservation for God’s people. In today’s world, where economic, political, and spiritual crises abound, the concept of dwelling in Goshen remains relevant. This sermon will explore what it means to dwell in Goshen and how believers can experience divine exemption, provision, and favor in a troubled world.
1. WHAT IS GOSHEN?
A. Biblical Meaning
- Genesis 45:10-11 – Joseph invites his family to live in Goshen, a place of provision and preservation.
- Genesis 47:6 – Pharaoh gives the best part of the land to Joseph’s family.
- Exodus 8:22-23 – Goshen is divinely protected from the plagues of Egypt.
B. Spiritual Symbolism of Goshen
- A place of divine nearness (Joseph, a type of Christ, was there).
- A place of protection from judgment (while Egypt suffered, Goshen was safe).
- A place of covenant blessings (Israel prospered in Goshen).
2. WHY DID GOD CHOOSE GOSHEN FOR HIS PEOPLE?
A. To Preserve His Covenant People
- Genesis 15:13-14 – God had already foretold Israel’s journey in Egypt.
- Goshen was the place God used to preserve His covenant nation in a foreign land.
B. To Protect His People from Plagues
- Exodus 8:22-23 – The land of Goshen was spared from the flies and plagues.
- Exodus 9:4-6 – God made a distinction between Israel and Egypt.
- Even today, God marks His people for divine exemption in times of disaster.
C. To Position His People for Increase
- Exodus 1:7 – Despite oppression, the Israelites multiplied in Goshen.
- Goshen was not just a place of survival but of supernatural growth.
- Psalm 92:12-14 – The righteous flourish even in difficult seasons.
3. HOW TO DWELL IN GOSHEN TODAY
A. Live in Covenant with God
- Israel enjoyed Goshen because of their connection to Abraham’s covenant (Genesis 17:7-8).
- In Christ, we have a better covenant (Hebrews 8:6).
B. Walk in Obedience to God’s Instructions
- The Israelites followed Joseph’s instruction to relocate (Genesis 46:28).
- Those who listen to God’s voice dwell in safety (Isaiah 1:19).
C. Trust in Divine Provision
- Goshen was a place of supernatural supply during a global famine.
- Philippians 4:19 – "My God shall supply all your needs..."
D. Remain in the Place of Divine Assignment
- God positioned Israel in Goshen for a purpose.
- Psalm 91:1 – "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
- Jonah 1:3-4 – When Jonah left his place of assignment, he faced storms.
4. BLESSINGS OF DWELLING IN GOSHEN
A. Divine Exemption
- God shielded Goshen from disasters (Exodus 8:22).
- Believers are exempt from the world’s destruction (Psalm 91:7-10).
B. Supernatural Prosperity
- While Egypt suffered, Israel prospered (Genesis 47:27).
- The obedient are blessed in famine (Job 5:20).
C. Divine Multiplication
- The Israelites multiplied exceedingly (Exodus 1:7).
- The righteous flourish in all seasons (Psalm 1:3).
D. Unshakable Peace and Stability
- Goshen remained secure despite Egypt’s suffering.
- In Christ, we have peace amid the storm (John 16:33).
5. ARE YOU IN GOSHEN?
Many people suffer unnecessarily because they live outside of God’s divine Goshen. Are you positioned in God’s will? Are you aligned with His covenant? Dwelling in Goshen requires:
- A relationship with Jesus Christ (John 15:5).
- Faith in God’s provision and protection (Psalm 37:25).
- Obedience to divine instructions (Isaiah 1:19).
Conclusion
Goshen represents a spiritual covering where God’s people thrive even in the midst of hardship. It is not about a physical location but a spiritual posture of faith, obedience, and divine alignment.
